Where is the wearable?

The first question is the obvious one, and it is the one every tracker answers. WearTags is being designed to answer it with more than one method, because no single method works everywhere.

Satellite positioning is precise outdoors and struggles indoors. Cellular gives the wearable its own way to report without depending on a parent's phone. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth fill in where the others are weak. The design intent is to use them together.

What this layer is blind to: a device indoors, underground, out of coverage, switched off, or with a flat battery. Location tells you where the wearable is. It does not tell you the child is with it.

Identify

Someone has found your child. Now what?

A passerby, another parent, school staff, security or emergency personnel. That person does not have your app, may not know your child's name, and will not know who to call.

We are designing the wearable to open a controlled web page for exactly that moment, through technologies such as NFC or QR. It shows only what you have authorized, and it gives the finder a way to reach you without handing a stranger your phone number.

What this layer is blind to: it only works once a person physically has the child or the wearable in hand. It does nothing while a child is still missing.

Notify

You should not have to be watching a map.

Alerts when events you have defined actually happen: leaving an expected area, a wearable that appears to have been separated, a scan by someone who found it, a battery running low.

Designated contacts can be told too, so the people who might actually be nearby are not waiting on one phone.

What this layer is blind to: a phone that is off, silenced or out of signal. And an alert that fires too often gets muted, which is why what counts as an event has to be yours to set.

Respond

The information that matters, to the person standing there.

Where you have authorized it, information that matters in an emergency can be shown to whoever has your child. Nothing is shared by default, and you decide field by field.

This is the part built on WearableDocs, which already puts a signed medical directive in front of a stranger who needs it and records that it happened.

What this layer is blind to: it can only show what you decided in advance to share. It is not a live conversation, and it is not a substitute for calling emergency services.

Document

Afterward, what actually happened?

Events, notifications and authorized access can form a timestamped record: what happened, in what order, and who saw what.

WearableDocs already does this for medical directives, with an access log that is sealed daily and countersigned outside our own systems. The same thinking applies here.

What this layer is blind to: a record explains afterward. It changes nothing while it is happening.

What a finder actually sees.

No app. No account. One phone, one tap, and a page built for someone acting under stress.

The person who found your child interacts with the wearable using an ordinary phone.

Only what you authorized for this moment. Not your address, not your child's school, not where your family has been.

The call is relayed. The finder never sees your number, and you can see and call back theirs.

The technology

When one signal can’t, another may.

GPS doesn’t work everywhere. Cellular coverage has gaps. Buildings can block satellite signals.

WearTags is being engineered to bring multiple technologies together (GPS, cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and more) to create a layered approach to locating and recovering a child’s wearable.
